Additions:
It sounds like you need an upper strut bushing / bearing. They usually have 3 bolts attaching to the body above the wheel and strut. What make and model?
I have removed more rear struts for replacement than front, while the car is on the ground remove the strut nut and jack it up until the strut is free of the bushing, and the spring is not compressed. If you have spring compressors that will fit on the spring to keep the tension, and can attach them in the limited clearance wheel well, that saves time, and is also safe. Next remove the bushing and spring cup, (spring cup and rubber isolator may have to come from the dealer or a junk yard if Rock Auto does not have tham). Remove the lower strut bolt or clamp, and replace the strut with the new one. Aim the strut carefully as you lower the car to insert in the bushing hole, thread on and tighten the strut nut without rotating the shaft, hold the top of the shaft with a second wrench and adapter as needed.
