Parts Changed:
Cabin Air Filter
Engine Air Filter
Repair / Installation tips:
Cabin Air Filter
WHY DIY: dealer will charge you about $35 for the part (a non-carbon activated Bosch filter) and about 1 hour of labor ($60-80).
CHANGE FREQUENCY: every 30,000 miles according to the Owner's Manual
PART RECOMMENDATION: FRAM Activated Carbon CAF (it controls some smells external to the vehicle, should provide superior performance versus the OEM filter)
LOCATION: located directly behind the glove box (you will not need to remove the glove box completely to access it)
TIME: The first time you replace the CAF it could take you up to 40 minutes, but it should take you about 15 minutes each time thereafter.
TOOLS: philips screwdriver, socket wrench, utility knife (or your preferred cutting device; only for the first time you change)
DIRECTIONS:
- Remove lower left glove box screw located underneath dash. Glove box should be lose in lower left after removing this screw but will still be supported by the lock mechanism and screws on the right side of the glove box.
- Open the glove box and you will notice that there is a plastic "catch" pin on the top left. Remove that pin by pinching together the pressure pins holding it in place from the outside of the box and then pushing it through into the glove box. The entire left side of the box should drop down and rest on the passenger floor mat. Directly in front of the glove box metal brace you should see a plastic bar with grooves pressed into the plastic at either end.
- Use the utility knife to cut the plastic bar at the grooves. Remove and discard the plastic bar. You should now have access to the glove box metal brace.
- Use the philips screw driver to remove the two screws just below each end of where the plastic bar once was.
- Use the socket wrench to remove the bolt-headed screw on the top left end of where the plastic bar once was.
- Firmly grab the left side of the glove box metal brace and rotate it clockwise to move it out of the way so that you can access the CAF compartment. The CAF compartment holds the filter in an upright position. It is front and center and should be made of black plastic.
- Remove the CAF compartment cover by carefully pulling back the tab at the bottom of the cover and then lifting the cover off of the pin at the top of the CAF compartment.
- Replace the old CAF (pay attention to the direction of the arrow on the side of the CAF to ensure you insert it in the correct direction) and follow the directions in reverse order to finish the job.
Engine Air Filter
WHY DIY: dealer will charge you about $15 for the part and about 15 minutes of labor (at $60-80/hour).
CHANGE FREQUENCY: every 15,000 miles according to the Owner's Manual
PART RECOMMENDATION: FRAM AF (it is nearly identical to the BOSCH OEM filter)
LOCATION: located on the driver's side of the engine where the black rubber air intake tube connects to a black box like housing
TIME: 2-3 minutes
TOOLS: none
DIRECTIONS:
- Open the two metal, pressure sensitive clips on either side of the AF compartment to disconnect the air intake tube from AF compartment.
- Push the air intake tube back away from the AF compartment and then push it off to the side so the whole AF is exposed. This may take some forcebut don't worry about damaging the air intake tube as it is pretty well constructed.
- Remove the old AF and inspect the AF compartment to determine if it should be vaccumed out. Sand, dust and debree in this compartment will soil your new AF much faster reducing its life, blocking airflow, and negatively impact your gas mileage.
- Place the new AF in the AF compartment and follow the directions in reverse order to finish the job.
