Diagnosis and Part Selection Advice:

How did you know this part needed replacement? Why did you choose a certain brand/part number?

The Mazda service manual recommends replacing the timing belt every 60000 miles. I have replaced it twice as preventative maintenance and neither time did the belt look worn, but I don't know if it shows any wear before breaking. The belt I used most recently was the Gates T141.

Part Comments

What came in the box? Were additional nuts, bolts, sealant, etc. needed for the repair?

All the accessory belts (alternator, etc.) have to come off so it is a good time to replace those too. The timing belt must come off to replace the water pump so some people suggest replacing the water pump as preventative maintenance. My car still has the original water pump and belt tensioner.

Repair / Installation tips:

Special tools needed? Have to remove other parts to reach this one? Any left-hand threads, sharp edges, messy fluids or other pitfalls to avoid?

Loosen the bolts holding on the accessory belt pulley before removing the accessory belts. The tight accessory belts keep the pulley from spinning. The pulley is one of the parts that must be removed to get the timing belt cover, etc. off.
